He also taught Gabriel everything he knows about whiskey.

This is exactly what a bottle episode like this is supposed to do, and I wish Daryl and Leah had been given the same consideration last week.Īs the night dies down, Gabriel tells the story of his old teacher when he was becoming a priest, a reverend who taught him how to preach by simply being with people, helping them, not preaching to them. The whole scene is fantastic, giving us a new side of both men and making me care about each of them more than I have.maybe ever. He guides Aaron through the whiskey tasting, and bluffs him handily at cards. Gabriel, we discover, knows plenty about both. Just two guys having their first drink in ages enjoying some really good whiskey over a game of poker. Gabriel finds an expensive bottle of whiskey (worth $2,000 in the Before Times apparently, which is a lot) and he and Aaron drink and play cards and joke around and have one of the most normal, sincere moments I’ve ever seen in this show.

It’s nice to laugh and smile along with the show once and a while.Īaron enjoying the finer things in life, playing some cards with Father Gabriel. It’s a genuinely funny moment, something far, far too rare in The Walking Dead. “That scream,” he says almost doubling over laughing. When he gets there, the boar is already dead and Aaron looks terrified. We cut to Gabriel who hears Aaron scream and goes rushing to his aid. Aaron is talking to whoever is locked inside a room inside the warehouse and slowly opens the door. Inside, the two men find plenty of supplies and one live boar. They decide to head back and follow their tracks when it starts to rain, washing the trail away.Įventually they come to a building that’s not on Maggie’s maps. When he stands up, he’s covered head to toe in mud, which Aaron finds humorous. Aaron saves him and the dead zombie falls on Gabriel, adding insult to injury. They keep going, eventually crossing through a large mud puddle when a zombie trips Gabriel and he lands face-first. He’s tired and he misses his daughter and doesn’t Gabriel miss his daughter also? (Nice reminder that these guys have kids, something I’m prone to forget).īut Gabriel wants to push ahead. “We’ll never know,” Gabriel replies.Īaron wants to turn back after a while.

The words “Save Us” written in huge letters on the roof.Įlsewhere, three burned corpses with flowers growing over them. We also get some interesting moments, like when Gabriel climbs up to the roof of a building they’re trying to enter and finds a mystery scene-the corpses of two lovers a zombie chained to a post. They toss a rock at it and it “wakes up.” Gabriel throws a wind-up timer clock into the nearby field and a whole host of withered zombies come shambling to life. One emaciated undead guy is sitting with his back slumped up against a post looking for all the world like an expired zombie. I almost titled this review “The Weary Dead” because the zombies we find all seem exhausted.

There’s some really great zombie stuff at the beginning of the episode. The opening of the episode is all about their failures. Sunday night’s episode follows Gabriel and Aaron as they search for food and supplies using a map Maggie provided them with. He grew a pair, became a leader of his community, and lost his faith. He had his run-in with Negan and some other traumas and over time, including over the big time jump following Rick’s abduction (which was almost Gabriel’s abduction) Gabriel changed. Alexandria could survive the zombie apocalypse, but it couldn’t survive Rick Grimes. As usual, they brought ruin down upon their hosts’ heads. In fact, not a single original Alexandrian remains. The arrival of Rick Grimes and his band of survivors marked the downfall of Alexandria. Of course, in retrospect Gabriel was pretty much right on the money. By the time they reached Alexandria, he was still a prick, warning the Alexandrians that Rick and company were no good (despite having saved his life). When they found him, he was a cowardly priest who let his congregation die out of fear rather than helping them. For now, the point I’d like to make is that Gabriel is one of the few main characters on this show with a character arc that really is natural and dynamic.
